Storico Canella is a custom typeface developed for the Italian wine brand Canella.
Inspired by the company’s historic lettering, selected from the many graphic interpretations adopted over the years, the project translates a distinctive element of its visual heritage into a contemporary typographic system, connecting tradition, brand identity and communication.
From lettering to a typeface
The design combines sans serif structures with distinctive slab serifs on the upper-left side of several letters. Medium-to-high stroke contrast and unconventional letterforms give the typeface a humanist character, while an extensive system of ligatures introduces rhythm and individuality.
Designed for its context
Developed exclusively for Canella, the typeface includes 459 glyphs, supports 220 languages and features 75 ligatures, alternative characters and an extensive kerning system. Its distinctive forms extend the brand’s visual language across editorial design, packaging, promotional materials and merchandise.
