DA Alla Riscossa

DA Alla Riscossa is a typeface developed from the lettering of the poster for Fantozzi alla riscossa (1990), the seventh chapter in the saga dedicated to Italy’s most famous accountant. In this film, the narrative gradually moves away from the strictly workplace-centered situations that characterized much of the earlier series and focuses more on the protagonist’s personal life. Fantozzi attempts to overturn his economic and social condition by pursuing a definitive redemption that, as often happens in his adventures, ultimately turns into yet another disappointment. The poster perfectly reflects this balance between heroic aspiration and inevitable failure, combining comic and melancholic tones that form the conceptual foundation of the typeface.

Morphologically, DA Alla Riscossa is a heavy, compact sans serif built from simple geometric forms and solid volumes. Its overall structure recalls the language of Italian popular advertising typography of the 1980s and 1990s, prioritizing immediacy and visual impact. However, several details disrupt this regular framework, introducing a narrative and ironic dimension. The most distinctive feature is the “A”, whose crossbar is replaced by a circular module, transforming an ordinary letter into a strongly recognizable sign. This solution is complemented by strokes that extend beyond the conventional limits of the glyph, as in the case of the “N”, creating unexpected visual tensions and an internal dynamism that contrasts with the weight of the overall structure.

Wide curves, generous apertures, and the absence of contrast contribute to a typeface that is both robust and approachable, capable of balancing emphasis and lightness. Designed for titles, posters, packaging, and visual identities, DA Alla Riscossa translates into typographic form the blend of comedy, fragility, and stubborn hope that defines the world of Ugo Fantozzi.
